The following speakers have been confirmed for the 2016 Convention:

As a CEO, senior executive, publisher and business journalist, Amanda has been at the forefront of Australian media and communications for more than 25 years; in particular leading change through the constant stream of disruptive digital and social technologies that have transformed the industry. Amanda has been the force behind the growth of media brands including BRW, the Fast 100 and SmartInvestor. In 2007 Amanda launched some of Australia's first digital media brands, including her SmartCompany and StartUp Smart before merging her business with Private Media, owner of Crikey. Amanda has also worked for ANZ as head of social and digital media at ANZ where she led the bank’s content and social media strategy, started the award winning NotableWomen program and was also associate editor of BlueNotes, ANZ’s ground breaking media publication. In December 2015, Amanda launched a new business to help executives, CEOs and corporates navigate the rapidly changing social and digital landscape. She is CEO of Notable Media, a communications and marketing business for executives and corporates to help them use social media, digital platforms and content to build communities, conversations and business results.

Ben Williams - Storman Software

From his early years working in, and then managing, a self storage facility in Adelaide, Ben has been providing creative ideas & business-building advice to self storage owners & staff for almost three decades.

Chris Catto - Putney Breeze Business Advisors
Chris Catto - Putney Breeze Business Advisors

Chris’s professional career to date spans 17 years and has involved various senior financial and management roles for world class industry leading organisations. Across his career Chris has successfully managed and improved executive management reporting, product development, cash flow, team performance, budgeting, and forecasting. His experience also includes conducting due diligence on acquisition targets for a publically listed multinational organisation, concluding with price recommendations. Chris has been employed by global industry leaders such as Aviva, BBC, Ericsson and Toll. Apart from being a qualified accountant, Chris holds a Bachelor of Commerce, a Master of Business Administration, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is the author of Premiership Business.

David Blackwell - Urbis
David Blackwell - Urbis

David has recently joined Urbis from Blackwell Consulting and has over of 35 years’ experience in the real estate industry concentrated in property valuation and specialised consultancy. He has previously held a senior Estate Management position with the Fiji Native Land Trust Board. David was a Director of the Arthur Andersen Real Estate Services Group in Sydney for 4 years. Prior to merging his practice with Urbis be operated his own specialised valuation and property consulting business, Blackwell Consulting from 2001 to March 2012. David has undertaken valuations and research in the self storage industry for a range of self storage operators and industry participants including Abacus Funds Management (Abacus Storage Fund), Kennards Self-Storage, Rent-A-Space Self Storage, and the Australasian Self Storage Association.

David is Director of Strategy at the marketing and online agency Greenfields. With more than 20-years experience, David is an in demand consultant, speaker and operational expert in the areas of online strategy, digital marketing, web platforms, social media, content, digital networks and broader marketing and business strategy consulting and implementation programs. His client experience includes companies such as NAB, Westpac, Bayer, Siemens, Nintendo, L’Oreal, Carlton FC, Built, Fairwork Australia and the Victorian Government. David's qualifications include an MBA from Melbourne Business School and a Bachelor of Arts (English and Sociology) from Monash University.

Holly Ransom – CEO Emergent Solutions

Holly Ransom is the CEO of Emergent Solutions, a company specialising in the development of high performing intergenerational workforces, leadership and social outcomes. Holly is renowned for generating innovative solutions to complex multi-stakeholder problems for corporations, governments and non-profit organisations, and for coaching and professionally mentoring leaders of all generations around the world. In 2014, the Australian Prime Minister appointed Holly to chair the G20 Youth Summit, resulting in the first summit to secure its policy demands from G20 leaders. Holly also co-authored the strategy paper on youth entrepreneurship and unemployment for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal agenda. Her corporate career has involved working as Chief of Staff to NAB Wealth Chief Executive Andrew Hagger and for Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh, leading key organisational strategy and business improvement initiatives and integrated corporate affairs projects.

Joe Doyle - Select Training

Joe is the owner and primary trainer at Select Training and has been providing sales and customer service training for organisations for over 16 years. Joe has a deep passion for exceptional “care factor” customer service which was germinated during his 6 years with Woolworths. Then as National Training Manager for Millers Self Storage Joe helped develop a strong service culture that aimed to turn ordinary customers into “raving fans”. In 2008 Joe founded Select Training with a view to expanding training to clients beyond the self storage industry. Some these customers now include News Corp, Laser Clinics Australia, La-Z-Boy, ResMed, Fuji Xerox, Remondis, Sydney University Health and Fitness, Secure Parking and the Department of Education. “However, Self Storage has been one of my passions since 1994 and I have loved every minute that I have been involved with the Self Storage industry.”

Jonathan Layton - Storco Storage Systems

Fresh out of School, Jonathan joined his father Peter in the family business starting out on the factory floor and then working his way through the many facets of the business and in a few short years assumed the position of Managing Director. 15 years later Jonathan is now the co-owner and director of the company along with his brother Mark, specialising in manufacturing, design and construction for the self-storage industry on a multinational level. Very passionate about the industry and already working with many of you, Jonathan is keen to share his knowledge and assist where he can with your self-storage investment.

Kevin is a member of ‘BigHat Professional Services’ which focuses on business improvement. He has over 30 years of business experience and is a member of Professional Speakers Australia. Kevin attributes his success to mastering the art of rapport, and his passion is ensuring sales people communicate better and make more sales! Kevin now partners with progressive organisations to improve their sales success via sales training courses and coaching sessions for managers and staff in numerous industries.

Malcolm Collins is a highly respected valuer with a broad range of experience built up over 40 years, including the last 20 undertaking self storage industry specific valuation and consulting assignments. He is acknowledged as an expert regarding the valuation of self storage properties and portfolios, including ‘greenfield’ developments. Malcolm is the Director of Collins and Associates, where he provides Director-only advice, market commentary and valuation reports – mortgage and asset valuations, market value and prospectus reporting and financial reporting to a range of styles and sizes of self storage facility operators located across Australasia. Malcom has been a Service Member of the SSAA for 17 years and is currently on the SSAA Board as the Service Member Representative.

Mark entered the self storage industry in New Zealand in 1991 as a manager of a recently developed site in Auckland. Since that time he has managed numerous independent centres and been a service consultant to the industry. For the past twelve years Mark Bateman has been the NZ Regional Director of Storage King, working to expand the business throughout NZ. He is a Life Member of the Self Storage Association of Australasia, an industry he has worked in for over 25 years. There are few people who know more about self storage in New Zealand.

As director of a leading business broking and commercial agency for over 20 years, Matt has a thorough understanding of both the real estate and the business components of self storage complexes. He was president of the Commercial and Industrial Chapter of the REIV 2008-2011 and Highway Frontage itself has specialised in self storage for the last 15 years and is a service member with the SSAA.

service offering. Michael joined Pitcher Partners’ predecessor firm in 1987 and was admitted to the partnership in 1999. He specialises in providing advice to owner-managed businesses who do not have access to an internal Financial Controller, providing support to their management. He advises clients in relation to the structuring of their affairs, taxation, management and growth of their businesses. Throughout his career Michael has gained specific expertise within the property industry, leading to his appointment as co-chair of the firm’s Property and Development group. Michael is a registered company auditor and tax agent.

Rennie Schafer – SSA UK & FEDESSA CEO

Rennie Schafer has been part of the self storage industry for over 12 years. He commenced as the first full time executive officer of the Self Storage Association of Australasia in 2004, and spent the following 9 years initiating many major projects such as the creation of the managed storage agreement, the upscaling of the industry conference and producing the first demand study. Rennie also helped in the development of the Asian market organising the first meetings of Asian Self Storage operators and laying the foundation for the formation of the Asian Self Storage Association. In 2013 Rennie moved to the UK to head up the UK Self Storage Association. In 2014 his role was expanded to also include the CEO of the Federation of European Self Storage Associations where he was tasked with creating common operating standards and legal terms across the European Industry. Rennie has seen 100’s of self storage stores around the world and worked with a range of operators from large publically listed companies to small family run container storage sites.

Saul Eslake worked as an economist in the Australian financial markets for more than 25 years and has now started up his own independent economics consultancy business, based in Tasmania. Saul has previously been a Member of the Howard Government’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Policy Advisory Councils; of the Rudd and Gillard Government’s Long Term Tourism Strategy Steering Committee and National Housing Supply Council; and of the Australian Statistics Advisory Committee. He has also previously served as a Director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (1997-2004) and as Chairman of the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board (2006-2011). Saul has a first class honours degree in Economics from the University of Tasmania, and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia.

A valuable member of the SSAA team Simone has been involved in the self storage industry for over 15 years. She has helped literally hundreds of SSAA members in dealing with interesting legal predicaments that arise when operating a self storage business, and is also a regular contributor to the Insider Magazine. Simone often presents at SSAA conventions and as a lawyer who speaks plain English you can understand, she is always highly regarded.

Steven O'Neill - Pitcher Partners

Steven is a Manager in the Business Advisory and Assurance division of Pitcher Partners where he is responsible for audit, management accounting, and income tax compliance. He has ten years’ experience in professional practice, commencing with Pitcher Partners in early 2001. Steven took a career break basing himself in London where he worked with Price Waterhouse Coopers in their Audit, Assurance and Business Services division. Steven returned to Pitcher Partners in June 2008. Steven has significant experience which includes statutory audit and internal controls testing for various large private companies. He has prepared periodical and annual management accounts for a number of large corporate groups, including consolidation, detailed finance report analysis, and KPI reporting.
